  • Part I: Sir William Sallies Forth

Date: 2010.05.22 | Category: Episode One: The Knight Meets His Fair Lady, Lady Longnose's Story | Response: 1

Our story begins once upon a time, not too long ago. A brave knight named Sir William rode out in search of a new quest. He’d been questing for many years, slaying dragons, rescuing maidens, and escaping from the spells of evil witches. In fact, he just finished a rather grueling mission that involved an enchanted shoe, a golden bat wing, and a rather nasty giant. Sir William loved being a knight, but it wasn’t always fun.

After traveling for many days, he came across a strange new village. As he rode through the streets, he noticed that the townspeople had funny things attached to their noses. He saw a man with a boot on his snoot, a boy a water bottle on his snottle, and a lady with a statue made of teak on her beak.

That’s weird, thought Sir William. Maybe they are going to a funny-nose costume party. He wanted to stop and ask someone about it, but he hadn’t eaten all day and he was hungry. He saw a cafe on the other side of the street. I’ll ask in there about the costume party, he thought.

Inside the cafe it was the same as it was outside in the street–everyone had something stuck to their nose. The woman who took his lunch order had a very long loaf of bread on her sniffer, and the pretty lady next to him had a daffodil tied to her nose with a dainty ribbon. As Sir William tried not to stare at the funny things hanging off of everybody’s nose, a little boy with a red crayon taped his sneezer tapped him on the shoulder and asked, “Are you a real knight?”

“Yes I am,” he answered. “My name is Sir William. What’s your name?”

    “Andrew,” the little boy replied.

Sir William was about to ask Andrew why he had a red crayon taped to his nose. When the lady next to him screamed. The daffodil had fallen off and she was scrambling to reattach it. The knight noticed that she had a very cute little button-shaped nose. Everyone in the cafe gasped and tried not to look.

“How embarrassing.” whispered an old lady with a wrinkled sock dangling from her schnoz.

“Why is she tying a flower to her nose?” Sir William asked Andrew. “Why does everyone have something on their nose?”

“Because we all have short, ugly noses,” the boy sighed. “We wish we had long noses so we tie something on them. It makes us feel better.”

“Why would you want a long nose?” Sir William asked–where he came from small noses were considered prettier than big ones.

“Oh, you have nothing to worry about” Andrew said, pointing to Sir William’s considerable snout. “But most of us were born with a too-small snoot. We all wish we had a nose like Lovely Lady Longnose.” Andrew said, pointing to the picture on Sir William’s coffee cup.

Sir William lifted his cup and noticed the royal seal surrounding a woman with an incredibly long sniffer. “Is this the Lady?” he asked pointing to the picture.

“Ah yes,” Andrew smiled, “that’s our Lady.”

Sir William stared at his mug. “I must meet her,” he said.

“She lives in the castle at the top of the hill just beyond the village,” Andrew offered. “If you want to see her, you must bring a present – something with a beautiful smell.”

  • Part IV: Sir William’s Search for the Perfect Scent

Date: 2010.05.19 | Category: Episode One: The Knight Meets His Fair Lady, Lady Longnose's Story | Response: 0

Sir William had a rather big nose, so he knew more about smells than most people. As he walked out of the cafe, the comforting aroma of baking bread wafted past his nostrils, but he passed by the bakery. Fresh bread was not the right gift for a lady. He smelled the dark mysterious odor of Venezuelan chocolate coming from the candy shop, but he did not go in. Chocolate would not be her favorite smell; he was sure of that. Exotic musks and essential oils filled on the air outside perfumeria, but he ignored it. Lovely Lady would want something more natural. He stopped for a moment at a fruit stand where the aroma of oranges and fresh limes was almost right, but not quite. What does one get for a lady with a perfect nose? Sir William headed for the flower store where he smelled every single rose and selected the ones with the sweetest, most beautiful scent. Now he was ready to meet Lovely Lady Longnose.

  • Part V: The First Meeting

Sir William mounted his horse, holding the roses carefully so as not to crush any of the blossoms. As he headed up the hill toward Lovely Lady’s castle, he felt more nervous than he had on any of his other quests. A guard stopped him at the front door. “State your business,” the guard said directly.

“I am Sir William from New York and I am here to pay respects to Lady Longnose. I’ve brought her a gift,” he said, holding up the roses.

“The lady does not accept visits from strangers,” the guard said dismissively. “You will have to come back when you are invited.”

Sir William’s heart sank. “But she doesn’t know me, how will I ever get an invitation?” he protested.

“That is not my concern,” said the guard. “Now please go away.”

Sir William hadn’t expected this. Knights were always welcome, but this cranky guard seemed determined to keep him out. There was nothing he could do but turn his horse around and walk sadly away. Just as he was about to go, he heard a lady’s voice calling down from the window above. “Those are the most perfect roses I have ever smelled!” Sir William’s heart jumped to his throat as he looked up to see the tip of a long, lovely nose extending out the third floor window. “Reginald, please escort the knight to the parlor. I will be down soon.”

Reginald, the guard, gave Sir William a sour look. “This way,” he said, not offering to help Sir William dismount or tie up his horse. Both tasks were tricky to do while holding a bouquet of flowers.

Lovely Lady Longnose was waiting in the parlor with a pink flower vase. “Put them in here,” she said. “Quickly, before the scent fades.” Sir William put the flowers in the vase. His heart jittering in his chest as he admired Lovely Lady’s magnificent nose. As she breathed in the scent of the flowers, appreciating the perfect aroma, he understood why everyone in town wanted a nose like hers.
